Learn how to make a simple sheet with a thin long band with easy -to -follow steps to improve your gift packaging, decor and handicraft projects.
When I recently made heart cards, I knew that I also wanted to add arches. I was inspired by simple prefabricated arches that were currently offered for sale in West Elm and Pottery Barn. There is no need to pay for your prices because the arches are so easy to fall for. I hope this tutorial will help you make your own arches.
These arches are also ideal for hair clips and not just for gifts or decor.
Below you will find pictures of the simple breathtaking arches that inspired me. A thin band arch for $ 9.50 in Pottery Barn and six thin band arches for 25 US dollars at West Elm (now sold out).
How to make a simple bow with a thin ribbon

Materials used
- sharp scissors
- Measuring tape
- Thin band or different types of gang (I bought 10 meters red velvet band for less than 10 US dollars. The length of your buges determines how much band you need. I was able to make 18 arches.)
- Flower wire (or gator clips or hair clips, but then you also need a hot glue)

Step-by-step instructions
You may have seen simple arches by wrapping and bounding the tape around your fingers. (I quickly show this DIY Bow version in my video) This tutorial is the same concept, but instead only carried out on a flat surface.
If you make them as simple as I show below, you can make the upper smaller. If you wrap the tape around your fingers, the arch top is much larger. This can look a little strange with a thin band.
- Cut a piece of band. I cut a 20-inch piece if you want the ends to be longer, make sure to cut it longer.
- Grind the tape as shown with the velvet side on the outside of the loop. (The loop should not be exactly in the middle, since one of the hanging ends gets used to binding the bow. This band side Should be a little longer. It depends on whether you want the bends to hang evenly or not.)
- Get the middle of the upper loop down to create two arch folds.
- Then take the right side of the hanging volume with two fingers.
- Fold the hanging band up and back to the back. This should create the middle of the buges. Turn the bow to show the back.
- In the left loop on the back you have to push the tape that you have just folded backwards.
- Hold the two arch folds/arch loops with the thumb and index finger of your left hand while you push the right -sided end of the band into the loop.
- Keep the two arch folds on, whereby your fingers can rinse on the work surface while moving to the ribbons on the other band.
- Pick the hanging ends while holding the upper bow loops/ears. This creates the arch node.
- Make all adjustments to the rear part of the arch and attract them as required.
- Turn the bow and make more adjustments until you have the desired look.
- Keep the center of the arch with a finger so that you can easily open the loops with your other hand so that you are not completely flat.
- You can insert some floral wire through the back of the bow to attach them to what you want. (Or you can glue them on hair clips or alligator clips with hot glue)
- For one finishing touch, you can cut an angle with scissors to the hanging ends of the band. And you are ready with your beautiful thin band arch.

My tips for the perfect base sheets
- You do not need a floral wire and can simply put the arches on your Christmas tree branches, which I did most of them.
- You can make the same type of bow with a wide band for a completely different look and a different bug.
- If you make your arches for a Christmas tree, plan the length of the tape according to the size of your tree. I made mine for a small tree, so I didn’t want my ends to be super long. You may want you to make you much longer for a larger tree.
- There are many other creative opportunities to use this type of thin band arches. Use them on candle sticks, lamps, gift packaging, door cladding bars, other hair accessories, wreaths, flower arrangements, as a tree top or party decorations.
