What is the standard kitchen table height?

The standard kitchen table height is 36 inches, measured from the floor to the worktop.

This includes:

  • 34.5-inch basic cabinets
  • 1.5 inches thick worktops

This height is widely accepted for comfort, practicability and compatibility with standard devices.

Why 36 inches became standard

Originally founded in the 1930s, 36 inches were selected on the basis of the average human amount at that time. Since then, the default setting has remained because it fits a variety of tasks, devices and users.

Standard meter height against ergonomics

User height Ideal counter height (ergonomic range)
Under 5’3 “ 32–34 inches
5’4 “to 5’10” 36 inches (standard)
Over 6’0 “ 37–39 inches
Wheelchair user 28–34 inches (ADA guidelines)

Tip: To find your ideal meter height, keep your arms at an angle of 45 ° over a surface. Measure 3 to 4 inches under your elbows.

When should the standard adhere to (36 ″)

Reason Why is it important
General comfort Suitable for most adults
Device compatibility Match stoves, dishwasher and most kitchen products
Resale value Buyers expect standard heights
Design consistency Creates a clean, uniform kitchen layout
budget Standard cabinets and worktops are cheaper and widespread

When to break the rule

Reason Use Custom Counter Heiting
The user is very large or short Prevents back or shoulder pollution
Multi -generation house Accessible to children, seniors or wheelchair users
Special tasks (e.g. baking) Lower meters make kneading easier
Cultural cooking practices Different food preparation styles may need different surfaces
Aesthetic/design preference Adds visual interest and uniqueness
Permanent at home It is worth adapting if you want to stay in the long term

Do all counters have to be the same size?

No. Many kitchens mix heights for function and style:

Example: Keep the main counters at 36 ″, however, lift an island to 39 inches for bar seats or lower a baking station to 32 inches.

This approach saves money compared to adjusting the entire kitchen.
